The following is a small portion of what he and his crew do for Semper Valens before and while on the road, as told by Anthony: Our work actually starts about a month out when we receive our mission. We look over what has been ordered and make corrections to prevent us receiving equipment we don’t need. Then we submit our travel after the COR is approved. I then prepare our equipment for shipment, I have to ship my equipment along with the installers and the FEL. When we get our boots on the ground we have to complete the inventory anywhere from 3 to 100 pallets full of equipment. Once inventory is compete the equipment gets broken down to be installed. I then grab all the antenna’s request profiles, once the profiles come back, we start profiling the antenna’s which usually takes 2 days to complete, at the same time I will start burning hard drives. I have found that every proposal is different and just like a software development project, takes on a life of its own. On June 6, 1944, more than 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline, to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which, “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” More than 5,000 Ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end, the Allies gained a foot-hold in Continental Europe. The cost in lives on D-Day was high. The wearing of poppies in honor of America’s war dead is traditionally done on Memorial Day. The origin of the red poppy as a modern-day symbol of this day was actually the idea of an American woman, Miss Moina Michael. In war-torn battlefields, the red field poppy was one of the first plants to grow. Its seeds scattered in the wind and sat dormant in the ground, only germinating when the ground is disturbed—as it was by the very brutal fighting during World War 1. The practice of wearing of poppies was further inspired by the poem “In Flanders Fields,” written in 1915 by Canadian soldier John McCrae. He saw the poppies in burials around his artillery position in Belgium. Today, poppies are both the symbol of loss of life as a symbol of recovery and new life, especially in support of those servicemen who were damaged physically or emotionally. On June 10, 2017, Dan Neil Young, 59, of Whetstone, Arizona, passed away of a sudden illness. Mr. Young was a respected and valued member of the Semper Valens Solutions (SVS) team. In his memory, The Dan Young Scholarship was established to honor him and his charitable contributions of his time to the community around him, the industry he worked in, and each team he supported with his contributions of knowledge, skills and abilities. The Dan Young Scholarship is the Executive Group’s way of honoring him and keeping his memory flowing with each person it touches. Dan’s Story Dan was born in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania, on Jan. 21, 1958. He graduated from Penns Grove High School in 1976 and earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Delaware. He was a Russian linguist in the Army and served in Germany during the Cold War. After his service, Dan went on to earn his master’s degree in systems engineering from the University of Arizona. CMMI doesn’t have to be difficult. I know, I know, that’s going to raise some eyebrows for our readers! Many organizations struggle with achieving a Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) assessment, because they set the achievement of the rating as the goal. At Semper Valens Solutions, Inc., we also had a clear desire to demonstrate the maturity of our processes, but rather than focusing on CMMI, we chose to embrace process improvement, and innovate how we conduct our day-to-day business as the vehicle to ride to a successful CMMI rating. We focused our process improvement efforts on our quasi-automated – and universally reviled – travel management process, and initiated a process to automate it.
